A Changing Landscape
Posted in GeneralIn a recent Billboard mail out, we saw some really useful insight from the NARM Music biz conference. As we all know, labels have been forced to cut staff dramatically and are outsourcing many of their traditional functions, including A&R. That's where we come in. The game has changed, but it's those who adapt that will survive and succeed.
See the exert below and don't forget to take advantage of the BILLBOARD section of A&R 101.
“We’re doing more with less,” one major label executive said when asked how his company was doing. Outsourcing is one way to do more with less. Outsourcing lets labels and management companies build a team around an artist or project without hiring full-time staffers. The industry is filled with former record label staffers plying their trade as consultants. There are numerous startups -- RootMusic, Official.fm, Moontoast -- trying to help music companies market and sell music efficiently. Music Reports wants to help companies outsource their royalty accounting. A company like Mtheory provides marketing, strategic and back office services to artist managers, effectively freeing up managers to manage. The list goes on and on and gets larger and larger.

A&R Careers
Posted in GeneralAs the major label world continues to condense with the merging of several major labels & publishers over the past 5 years, the gateway to an A&R position continues to shrink.
Many A&R people are choosing to operate independently, starting their own labels, management companies, and independent music publishers.

The Future of A&R?
Posted in GeneralFor those of you who weren't there (or didn't get a chance to stream it off Youtube), we are currently halfway through another year of Coachella. It closes out this upcoming weekend with some great performances.
It's no secret now, but Tupac made a special guest appearance...as a hologram. See for yourself in the video below. Many are beginning to ask if this is the future of touring. We here at MLS wonder how this will affect our roles as A&R people. Of course they will always need the songs, but what if we could custom build our artists to meet the demands of the public? (weird, we know)
We prefer the real thing, but check out the video of this Japanese Pop Star!
